‘The first and worst of all frauds is to cheat one’s self. All sin is easy after that’

I got very poor grades in my Moral Science in school, so theoretically I flunked at the very beginning of starting out my life as a social animal, and hence the following article is not exactly certified by the Board for Secondary Education. But then this is a free country, I can do and say whatever I like and get away with it. So this time, I am merely jotting down my views on a very common occurrence of our lives. A thing that gained my interest very recently, when I had to sit down for half an hour with a friend of mine constantly whining about cheating in examinations.

I do not intend to take a stand, and spit fire at those involved in the highly skilled art of cheating. The article merely mentions some very key elements involved in the complex problem. The difficulty with any argument against such things is that it continuously revolves around ethics and morality, thereby making it not only cumbersome but also hypocritical. I intend to elucidate certain aspects of this grievance which very often are forgotten when examining a problem of such nature.

Firstly, we need to define cheating. As oxford puts it ‘an act of dishonesty to gain profit’ is cheating. Overlapping the above definition with our educational system we get a clear idea of what cheating is. An action which gives you an unfair advantage over others in an examination will be termed as cheating. Therefore any such act like carrying chits, writing on desks, and other means can be easily clubbed together as an act of cheating liable for punitive action. But the definition has a flaw. Suppose in an examination of 100 students, 60 are involved in the unfair practices, does it still give you an extra advantage or does it simply bring you at par with others around you? Think about it..

Secondly, the ‘art of cheating’ as I put it requires both skill and courage to carry it out successfully without being caught. The level of difficulty involved in any method of cheating clearly keeps a check on the practice and only those in dire need of passing the examination resort to such methods. But when it becomes easy to cheat and gain marks, obviously there will be a swarm of students indulging themselves in such acts. When you are sure of not getting punished for doing a bad deed, can you be held guilty for trying to gain an added advantage in today’s competitive world?

Thirdly, any student involved in the act of cheating can never be trusted with a position of responsibility. As a student there are certain norms we must follow and groom our self for the future difficulties, while working within those rules. An act of cheating does not indicate a rebellion, rather it accentuates the weakness of a person’s moral fiber. A person who succumbed to the small pressure of passing an examination will obviously not be able to handle situations in real life which not only pressure but also money and lives of a lot of people. Entitling such a person to key position in any organization would only jeopardize the company’s future.

Fourthly, nobody is born a criminal; you become one only when the circumstantial pressures become overwhelming. Students resorting to cheating shows the amount of pressure being put on the young minds, and the fact that knowledge today is judged by the grades and not on abilities. I have so far avoided speaking on cheating being wrong morally simply because we today are living in world where we need logic and reasoning to prove everything. People today don’t understand emotions and look for reasons to explain every action. But there is a sense of right and wrong in every human being which cannot be denied, and our conscience clearly tells us what is morally correct and what is not. Stabbing a person is not the same as slapping him, and our conscience tells us this. We don’t need rocket science to prove the difference between good and bad. In a similar fashion cheating and using unfair means is simply bad and we know it. You don’t have to prove or disprove it. We already are blessed with a sense which does it for us.

Finally, cheating does in fact get you in a position of advantage over others. As we know that in war it is always beneficial to have a vantage point under your command. Hence I ask what is wrong with a person seeking a head over others in a difficult competition? Now the only answer I got was, that in a society like ours, driven solely by monetary gains, it is completely rational to cheat if it benefits you.

As you can see, most of the points mentioned above simply turn out to be self contradictory, and complexly intermingled. Also it can be seen that it is not that cheating is itself the problem, it is merely an outcome of a lot different things spiraling in space and intertwining with each other. Moral weakness, failure of educational system, overburden, pressure to succeed and most importantly the lack of moral values in today’s society, all add up to cause this evil.

I guess that will be it for now. And please do not forget to comment on this article. I would absolutely love to know your views on it too. Please do comment. .

A very well written entry. I must say, cheating is bad, but I also know that many people do it because "everyone else does it anyways", so they think there's no point being good and staying away from such things.

This semester especially, I saw how far some people take cheating, and frankly speaking I am completely against it, because I have seen good people who've worked hard to get their grades suffering because of the limit which cheating took this semester.

As long as cheating is done to pass or get a normal grade, I guess it cannot be avoided, but once it's done in such a manner that people who work hard to get their marks suffer for a grade, then I think it's going too far. I was highly irritated this semester because I saw how some of my friends suffered due to others cheating so much.

it is for the first time that i m writing some comment on your blog as we can't discuss it face to face right now. i hope u remember the day when i requested u not to ask me to write the script of "Aaina". but still, i wrote that script nd myself took the role of the guy who cheats in the exams, coz somewhere inside me, i wanted to at least try once to change people here. but i was wrong, we were wrong.... we were trying to make deaf people listen our voice. how can we expect that their conscience is alive. the people who tell us "u r a fool if u don't want to cheat just bcoz of ur silly principles" are indeed dead from inside. but it was disappointing to see u, kind of justifying them in the end of your blog. this pressure, unfairness etc etc are just some silly excuses to hide one's weakness. everybody likes to work least and gain most, but these r the situations which test a person's character and once a person surrenders to these situations, he can never rise again.

but it gives some satisfaction to see a few people (that includes u also) who r proving the point that hard work is the only key to success. i wish they always follow this path.....

My first comment too, but i dont wish to take a stand, I too never thot i wud cheat, but gave up the idea at the same time in discussion. Here is no justification just a view.

There was Test Cricket . then the 60 , the 50 over format and now T20.No personal glitches;but as the traditionalists say "We have lost the beauty of Cricket." :| "It doesnt matter how u get ur runs as long as they come by" is often heard towards the end of the innings. Still the shot of a perfect cover drive or a straight solid push gives much more delight to the eyes than any slog which wud give the same denomination. We all live in a objective oriented world.

"To err is human" All I have seen so far ;U need much more to remain a Purtian in this world.

Surprising that this post has been here for so long and I didn't come to know!
Well you have addressed a burning problem through this post. This is an issue that has driven so many of us crazy towards the end of this semester. We have had more than enough; I fail to understand what extreme pressures do these people (indulging in acts of cheating) face that they forget all values and take to this unethical act, if the fear of failure looms so heavily over them, then what about the fear of committing such a deed, how can they be happy with marks and grades which they know are not the result of their work, what happiness do they get in having an upper hand over others just because the others would not give up their honesty? Does their conscience not prick them, do they not have atleast some sleepless nights? Seriously I wish to know what exactly goes on in their minds!
All I can say is that many deserving and "honest" of my friends have suffered just because there were others who were crossing lines of ethics. Their acts are in no way justified, call it the failure of education system or pressure on them, I say what holds for them holds for all their students too. They face the same scene, only that their roots are firmer and they still remember some moral science lessons that they had taken not merely for a few grades.

Hey ..well I love reading this idiots posts :P but I don’t write much so please ignore the grammatical errors and the very very sparse use of lengthy words... ;)
well,i hate cheating
n i am one of the biggest cheaters around in mnnit, so much so that people feel i would have surely flunked a couple of subject if it wasnt for joshi, contradicting statements aren't they but still both of them hold ground.
let me clarify, lets just say you are FORCED into a wrestling match with the Great Khali(:P)and you can use a steel chair if the refree is not watchin ,just tell me how many of you won’t use the damned chair even though it is illegal or CHEATING as you guys refer to it. The point I wanna prove is that we don’t cheat to win we cheat to survive as a desperate measure.
For those who think cheating shows that we don’t have a character or our moral fiber is weak please think again because some of us are forced into this and we have been left no choice. for once I would like to see you having your back against the wall and then check out your moralities. for you everything came easy because you were doing what you loved but for us its just another painful day in shackles that stops us from chasing our dreams .
You guys who are good at cramming and scoring good cpi’s in our beloved intitute keep complainin about us proverbial cheaters but hey let me just say that if you who do your studies with heart are still afraid of someone like me who is forced into doing something he doesn’t wanna do and never does it with heart then I think you are a good for nothing who is just looking for an excuse to blame his failures on others.
You can either keep cribbing n complainin about us and show that you yourself are morally weak or you can just ignore it or better still help us and show your greatness.

I had a better AIR then many of you n now I have a pointer lower than almost all of you
But I don’t care and I sure as hell don’t give a damn just because it doesn’t matter its not what I wanna do in life I don’t care what my cpi is as long as I can get out of this place in the shortest possible time but you have a problem with that too.what kinda person stops others from chasing their dreams ?
just a word of advice please don’t hide selfishness in a shroud of competitiveness. ;).

damn u joshi...what have u put me into?? good work there dude ..u have brought up another 'kashmir' or 'ayodhya' problem..see i think whatever u do..the ultimate judge will be ur conscience .. if u regret at some point of ur life that cheating was a bad thing to do then u r correct & surprisingly if u do not regret then also u r correct..
so let's not get into it..student's duty is to learn something here ( while maintaining their grades (atleast trying to) )and invigilator's duty is to keep a check on them..if anyone of them do not fulfill their purpose then its a crime..so this was morally..now let's think practically..
advantage: some people who r going to flunk with or without the reason can save their lives..
disadvantage: it kills the spirit of trying ( a breathing example is there very close to us.
i don't know why disadvantage seems too gr8; ultimate cost paid to pass some xams..and this was again for the same person who cheats..
now for the one who doesn't cheat
advantage: can feel proud whatever he or she has achieved, keeps on trying, in a long run learn something
disadvantage: has to work hard inspite of it sometimes get failure ..cuz its all relative ..

now here of course cost paid is painful( u bet )..but self satisfaction ( one thing v live for) and spirit of trying hard which can win the world including oneself(which is a much greater deal)..

in the end nobody's is fully pure..so its fair until u loose ur spirit of trying , self confidence, loose the motive of learning ( not cramming jst understanding ) and of course u get caught!!![:P]..
